HerdRanger is designed to connect directly to the remote host you configure. It is not a cloud relay for your agent conversations or terminal output.
SSH host identity is checked, and saved connection credentials are protected in the app’s encrypted storage. You should still use appropriate host security, strong credentials, and your own network controls.

Is HerdRanger an official Herdr app?
No. HerdRanger is an independently developed Android companion. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or released by Herdr.
What do I need to use it?
You need Android 9 or later; a Linux, macOS, or Windows host you own or administer; Herdr 0.9 with protocol 22 (opens in a new tab); an SSH account using a password or supported OpenSSH key; and a network path between the phone and host. See the complete prerequisites before installing.
Is it available on Google Play?
Not publicly. A small Google Play closed beta is being prepared. People who register interest may be invited when the release candidate and testing program are ready; joining the list does not guarantee access.
Can HerdRanger start, replace, or update Herdr automatically?
No. Discovery and reconnect never install, replace, update, or restart Herdr. Only a separate confirmation can create and start a named session, start a known stopped session, or stop a running non-default session. HerdRanger sends that chosen action once, verifies the result, and does not blindly retry an uncertain outcome.
Are notifications instant?
Not quite, but live monitoring is close: while its foreground connection is active, HerdRanger listens for agent changes and normally alerts within seconds. It also rediscovers running sessions every 30 seconds. Standard periodic background checks are scheduled by Android—normally no more often than every 15 minutes—and may be delayed by battery, network, or device restrictions. Notifications never include terminal output.
What will the early-access program involve?
The planned program is a small, 14-day Google Play closed beta for qualified Android users who already run Herdr and can administer the SSH host they test. Testers will use a disposable space and agent, follow a focused workflow, and report candid setup and reliability feedback. No ratings or positive reviews are requested.

This early-access program is only for people who currently use Herdr, actively work with agents, and have SSH access to a host they own or are authorized to administer. The release candidate and Play closed test are still being prepared; registration does not guarantee access.
Tell us how you would test it. We use these answers to plan a focused early-access group. Never include hostnames, addresses, usernames, credentials, pairing codes, terminal output, screenshots, prompts, agent output, or transcripts.
