Choose timeliness, battery use, and visibility.
Live monitoring is designed to alert close to real time while its foreground connection is active. Periodic background checks trade speed for lower ongoing battery and network use.

Periodic and live monitoring
| Mode | Behavior | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Periodic | Android schedules background checks for newly waiting agents, normally no more often than every 15 minutes. | Lower ongoing use, but Android may delay the schedule. |
| Live | Foreground session connections listen for agent changes; running sessions are rediscovered every 30 seconds. | Alerts normally arrive within seconds, with more battery and network use. |
“Not live” does not mean disabled: periodic checks can still run when notifications are enabled. Neither mode includes agent output in an alert.
Enable notifications
- Open Settings → Agent notifications.
- Enable agent notifications and grant Android notification permission (opens in a new tab).
- Choose a sound or return to the system default.
- Optionally choose Start live monitoring.
- If alerts matter, review Android background optimization (opens in a new tab) and the device manufacturer’s settings.
Live mode shows one quiet persistent monitoring notification with a Stop action and any waiting-agent summary. It does not create a duplicate alert for the same waiting state.
Open and clear an alert
Tapping an agent alert opens the associated server, session, space, and agent conversation for review. Notifications do not offer prompt-answer or approval choices.
Opening an alert does not by itself claim the agent stopped waiting. The alert and in-app marker clear only after a later authenticated scan confirms the state changed.
Notification privacy
Alerts are designed to identify waiting work without including terminal output, credentials, or full agent transcripts. Android and the device vendor still control lock-screen presentation, sound, vibration, interruption, and background execution.
Monitoring state is device-specific and is not restored from an encrypted backup.
When alerts are late or missing
Check notification permission, HerdRanger’s notification setting, the selected sound/channel, battery restrictions, VPN and SSH reachability, saved credentials, and whether the agent is still waiting. A vendor may delay periodic work even when all settings look correct.
